Feeling Dan Filling Dalam Musik

Feeling Dan Filling Dalam Musik

Dan mereka menjawab “by feeling“. Pengertian feeling ini sebenarnya tidak jelas. Beberapa pendapat seperti ini :

Tambahkan seperlunya. Tidak perlu terlalu banyak sehingga jemaat sulit konsentrasi menyanyi. Bagaimanapun, anda bermain supaya jemaat menikmati Tuhan, bukan menikmati permainan anda.

“Feelings” and “Fillings” in Music

A lot of us may have heard the term ‘feeling’ in when playing music. Technically, it is the ‘hunch’ that sends our fingers into striking the right notes. When one asks their fellow player “How do you know the chords?” or “How do you know that ‘C’ comes after the ‘G#’?” they might answer “My hunch tells me so.” or “I felt it that way.” The definition of ‘feeling’ is not clear, however one may define these ‘feelings’ as :

  1. Like the traffic light – where we can tell for certain that the top light is red, followed by amber and green – when one have listened to the song, they can easily tell for certain that the tune that they heard consists of, for example, the musical notes of “C-G-A-B-C.”
  2. For songs that one may not be familiar with, they might tend to ‘feel around’ for the right notes; their ears justifies the notes they struck.

But in however ways one may define it, this ‘feeling’ is the ability to play the song correctly without referring to the musical score. Thus to some, this might sound challenging. However the good news is that we can learn how to ‘feel’. Some may take much shorter to ‘feel’, while others can take much longer. The most important thing is to keep practicing and keep listening. Like when one first are thought that the red on the traffic light means stop, the brain needs some time to interpret the information that the eye sees. In the very same manner, the brain needs some time to interpret the tune that the ear catches.

Another common literate term is ‘filler’. It is when one improvises a song by putting in additional notes between the song’s original notes. These are the note that are struck but is not the vital part of the whole song. It is like icing on the cake; with it, the song will sound better, but without it, the song will still be a song. These ‘fillers’ should not be abused; over-fill a song and the congregation might lose track of what they are singing. Besides, you are accompanying the congregation so that they can enjoy their time with God, not so that they can enjoy your accompaniment like it’s your concert.

One can easily ‘fill’ a song when their ears are familiar with the pitch of the notes that range from the lowest to the highest. If you are not confident with your feelings, it may be even harder to fill. Thus asking for help from a musician who is more familiar benefits not only you but also the congregation. Of course, one’s creativity differs from each other, and so they are free to determine what notes is used to fill, even if you might not agree completely. The complexity of these fillings might sweep you off your foot and puts the whole music off. Thus, find the filling that suits your style of play best. If you can’t find the fillings, then ignore the temptation to fill and stick with the original score – forcing to fill will only disrupt the whole worship. Remember that we are only accompanying the congregation who wants to enjoy His presence, not an audience who pays for a concert. Fillings, like cake icing, are great. But without them, the song will still be a song, like a cake will still be a cake.

  • Frekuensi latihan tentu mempengaruhi performance.

Tuhan memberkati pelayanan kita semua.

Facts Church Music Accompanist Should Know

  • The main purpose of being an accompanist: to help the congregation come closer to God through the music we play. This could be done not only with the proper techniques of playing the instruments but also to play each instruments from the heart – that is, to have our hearts poured out to God through our fingers on the fingerboard in the same way we do to sing. In doing so, some may prefer to sing along with the tune. You do not have to sing along; one should find whatever ways suits them best.
  • To involve as much musical instruments as possible is better than just one or two; one can find a whole orchestra to accompany the worship far more enjoyable than just a piano and a guitar. On an electric keyboard, for example, one can activate the built-in accompaniment and choose a variety of tunes – ranging from flute to guitar to drums – to make each song more colorful. This, however, does not mean that each of these varieties should be activated in together at once; by doing so it would instead be heard more like noises than a song. The best way is to leave some parts simple; filling each bar with only one type of instrument – the guitar for the first 5 musical bars and the piano for the next is a good combination. Going without any instruments is also advisable; this will give the congregation a little time to ‘rest’ away from the instruments and enjoys the lyrics of the song. We can also join them in singing while our fingers ‘rests’.
  • “Practice makes perfect”; this statement strongly applies here. How many times we practice is directly proportional to how good we perform on the day. One cannot simply define the ideal number of practice required; keep practicing until you are sure that you are good – that you can play each song “from the heart” without looking at the music sheet – and that the song we play would really be music to their ears.
  • Finally, prayer comes before performance. A lot of ‘miracles’ can be felt by the accompanist when they ask for His guidance. He is the one Who controls our thoughts and help us concentrate. One can play well without the guidance of the lord, but that is then when one lets go of his/her dependence on God and relies on our own self. So before you perform, pray.

Hopefully this article was useful, especially for those who want to become or already a church music accompanist. More explanation about feeling in music can be read in “Feelings and Fillings in Music”.

God bless our ministry.
